A prospective student speaks to a former internship program participant
How long did you stay in Shanghai?
I was there for two months. I wish I could have stayed more but I had to come back home to continue my university studies.
Overall, were you satisfied with the internship program?
Yes, Next Step Connections provided me with everything that I signed up for.
What about the housing?
Specially happy with the housing! Next Step Connections place the interns mainly in an apartment complex 15 minutes walking from jingan' temple (wich is a main metro station in shanghai). These apartments are really nice. I was there the first month in an individual room but there are also shared rooms. Then one intern left Shanghai because his internship was over, he was living in the other Next Step Connections housing location, which is an apartment for three people near Nanjing Xi Lu metro station, so I moved there. Next Step Connections staff helped me move. Both places were amazingly well-located.
What about the quality of your internship?
It is hard to compare a medical internship with something like journalism for example because in my field it depends more on what you do rather than the quality of the internship itself. Anyways, I was very happy with the internship that Next Step Connections found for me because it was exacly what I wanted.
What about the competence of Next Step Connections as an organization?
They are very professional. Even though they are experienced, they are young enough to understand us really well. They try hard to solve any problems that may happen and are always there for us.
Do you know what some of the main companies NSC places interns at?
I usually forget the names because it is not in my field but from what I have heard from other interns, the companies are usually well-known with good reputation. All the interns I met were very satisfied.
How far in advance were you provided with all the details of your housing and internship?
About a month before I arrived.
Is there anyone at Next Step Connections that you would recommend I work with directly?
They all work together and are all nice people trying really hard to make sure everything goes well.
Also, how many other interns were with you in Shanghai from NSC?
I met around seven, when I left there were five left and a new one was arriving on the day I left Shanghai.
Was it easy to meet them and did you all live together in the same building?
At the begining five of us were living in the same building, we often hang out together. At first, Next Step Connections organises dinners and other events so that we all can get together but later on we would just call each other and meet directly. Shanghai is amazing.
