A Newfound Passion for Art
Shanghai, China- August 2009- Initially an intern in a corporate marketing company, Italian Roberta Cucchiaro developed a new interest in art during her stay in Shanghai and decided to explore this newfound passion with Shanghai's Fellini Gallery. Her one month internship with the gallery might not seem long, but she definitely made the most out of it.
Located along Shanghai's French Concession, Fellini is one of the city's best known art galleries, having hosted exhibitions by Western and Chinese contemporary artists. As an intern in a small, private owned gallery in China, Roberta had the opportunity to make the most out of her skills and experience. One of her main tasks was to organize a joint exhibition between Fellini Gallery and another gallery in Milan, Italy. This included a meeting with the gallery owner from Milan during his Shanghai visit to discuss the possibilities of a partnership.
In addition, Roberta was also put in charge of creating a brand new catalog for Fellini. She was responsible for the design, which includes everything from the cover, colors and textures. As a side project, she also worked together with the web designer to design of several postcards for artists featured in the gallery.
Her responsibilities did not end within the gallery itself. Roberta was also exposed to the marketing side of the art business, such as working out partnerships with various restaurants around Shanghai's French Concession and attending social events to meet potential art buyers. Towards the end of her internship period, Roberta worked with a team in organizing Fellini's booth at the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, deciding everything from which artists to represent to the booth layout and event management.
Certainly a substantial internship experience, Roberta gained a broader set of skills during her stay in Shanghai, allowing her to have more choices in the future. Her 3 month program with next Step Connections in Shanghai has proved to be beneficial to her personally and professionally. Not only did she manage to experience public relations from both the art and corporate worlds, she has also gained a network of professionals and developed lifetime bonds with her fellow interns.
